Schools in England are still required to serve meat, dairy, and fish under the current School Food Standards.
These standards are now under review. Sign this petition to urge the Department for Education to end these outdated requirements.
Every day, 4 million school meals are served in the England alone, sustaining the exploitation of millions of animals. At a time of climate breakdown and mass animal suffering, children are still being taught that meat and dairy must be central to every meal.
School meals are not neutral. They shape what children grow up seeing as normal, healthy, and ethical to eat. Right now, schools are being used to normalise and reinforce dependence on the meat and dairy industries from childhood onwards.
This is how these industries secure their future.
If we want to end animal agriculture, we must stop embedding it into children’s lives. We must end mandatory meat and dairy requirements in schools.
WHAT WE'RE CALLING FOR
TO: The UK Department for Education
We call on the Department for Education to:
- Remove the requirement to serve meat, dairy, and fish in school meals,
- Give schools flexibility to design menus that reflect their students’ needs and values,
- Support sustainable choices that align with the Government's climate goals.
We fully support the Department’s mission to ensure all children receive nutritious, balanced meals. That mission can be achieved without mandating the inclusion of meat and dairy. Schools should be preparing children for the future, not being used to secure the future of the meat and dairy industries
